When to Replace Your Water Softener or Filter System

When to Replace Your Water Softener: Key Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore

If you have a well pump, you may be asking yourself when to replace the water softener or filter. The truth is that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question because every one or business is different.
The water composition in your area can also vary significantly compared to other sources, which can affect how often you need to replace filters and refill water softener salts.
In this article, we’ll cover five signs you need a new water softener or filter and provide you with everything you need to know to maintain your well system. Check our Water Treatment Systems.

5 Signs You Need to Change Your Water Softener or Filter System

Before delving any further, it’s important to note that water softeners need to be replaced every 10 years or so. However, they need to be replenished with salts, and some components may need to be replaced if they malfunction over time.
Here are five signs that indicate it’s time for a water filter replacement.

1. Foul Smells

If your water starts giving off foul odors, consider replenishing the salts. Some with filters, these do need to be replaced regularly, and they start emitting foul odors otherwise.
In severe cases with persistent odors in your water softener, this may suggest your system’s media or resin bed has deteriorated beyond repair and may actually need to be replaced.

2. Visible Scale Building Up

When you start noticing white residue on faucets or cloudy spots on glassware, it’s a clear indication that your filtration system isn’t functioning correctly.
Knowing when to change the water filter system or softener parts matters, especially if mineral buildup returns soon after a recent filter replacement.

3. Dry Hair and Skin

Hard water can quickly make your hair feel rough and your skin tight or itchy. Staying on top of water softener maintenance helps prevent these issues. However, if dryness returns even after cleaning or refilling the salt, it’s likely time to have it checked out by a professional.

4. Low Water Pressure

Experiencing slow or uneven flow from your faucets? A clogged or aging system might be to blame.
Remember that mineral deposits and blocked resin tanks can restrict water movement and potentially reduce the lifespan of your appliances. Therefore, keep this in mind when considering a potential replacement for your water softener. Find more about What Causes Low Water Pressure in a House With a Well.

5. Inexplicable Rise in Energy Bills

If your utility bills have increased without reason, your system may be the culprit, as hard water from inadequate well water filtration forces appliances to work harder.
Over time, scale buildup inside heating elements increases energy usage, signaling it’s time for a full replacement.

During the ice and snow storm my pump electrics called it quits, but somehow Aaron was able to navigate the roads and come by to get my water pumping again the same day. The following week the 5E crew was out to put in a high quality permanent fix that will be good for a long long time. Strongly recommend 5E if you want professionals who do high quality work in a timely fashion for a fair price.
