Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do you tell when you hit water when drilling a well?

Drilling crews use a combination of physical signs and technical monitoring to identify when a well has reached a water-bearing zone, known as an aquifer. One of the most immediate indicators is a change in the drill cuttings — the material brought up from below ground. When the bit moves through dry or tight rock and soil and then suddenly produces wet, saturated material, that’s a strong signal that water is present. Drillers also watch for the drilling fluid (used to lubricate the bit and carry cuttings to the surface) to suddenly change in consistency or volume, which can indicate that groundwater is entering the borehole. In some cases, water will actually rise on its own in the borehole — a phenomenon called artesian pressure — which is a clear sign of a productive water-bearing formation.

Beyond these visual cues, experienced drillers pay close attention to how the drill behaves. A sudden drop in drilling resistance, changes in drill speed, or shifts in the sound and vibration of the equipment can all suggest a transition into a fractured rock zone or gravel layer where water is stored. In the Willamette Valley and the foothills of the Oregon Coast Range — the kinds of terrain common across Benton, Linn, Lane, and Polk Counties — wells often penetrate multiple geologic layers before hitting a reliable aquifer, so recognizing these subtle signs requires real local knowledge and experience.

Hitting water, however, doesn’t automatically mean the well is finished. The driller still needs to evaluate whether the zone produces enough water to meet the property’s needs through a process called well flow testing. This measures the rate at which water enters the well and helps determine the appropriate pump size and system design. A well that shows water early in drilling might ultimately need to go deeper to reach a more productive formation, while a well that seems dry for much of its depth might open into a highly productive fracture zone near the bottom. That combination of hands-on expertise, proper testing, and local geological familiarity is what separates a reliable well from one that underperforms for years.

2. How does rotary air drilling help identify water-bearing formations?

There are different types of drilling methods. Most commonly in our part of Oregon, in the Willamette Valley and coast areas, we use what’s called Rotary air drilling. The driller uses high-pressure air and a small amount of water to blow cuttings out of the hole and to cool the drill bit. When the driller drills into a formation that contains water, the compressed air also blows that up to the surface with the cuttings. The driller can then stop advancing down further, turn the cooling water off, and see how much water is blowing out of the top of the borehole to gauge how much water is in the formation or aquifer.

During the ice and snow storm my pump electrics called it quits, but somehow Aaron was able to navigate the roads and come by to get my water pumping again the same day. The following week the 5E crew was out to put in a high quality permanent fix that will be good for a long long time. Strongly recommend 5E if you want professionals who do high quality work in a timely fashion for a fair price.
